The Houston Chronicle reports that in 2016, theft led crime in the 11 square mile city of Katy while homicides barely existed.

Data gathered from the city's 2016 Uniform Crime Report - a document that public entities give to the Federal Burreau of Investigation-displays the types of criminal offenses reported last year.

. Larceny-theft:  571 cases

. Assault: 295 cases

. Burglary: 92 cases

. Motor Vehicle Theft: 69 cases

. Rape: 19 cases

. Robbery: 18 cases

Criminal homicide: 1 case

The report does not list convictions of crimes but rather allegedly committed crimes. Katy Assistant Police Chief Tim Tyler addressed the high theft number by pointing out it as a crime of opportunity.  If someone leaves something out, somebody is going to pick it up.  Shoplifting is also considered theft. Most theft is going to be in retail shops where the only thing police can do before theft happens is to maintain a visible presence.

Please be aware that the park/pool are now being monitored via high-definition surveillance cameras.

Harris County Sherriffs' deputies work hard make their presence known and increase visibility in the area.  By targeting suspicious vehicles, persons, and vehicles that are having difficulty fathoming the purpose of a stop sign, deputies seek to be pro-active by discouraging issues before they occur.  The numbers continue to show Settlers'  activity to be on the low side which is now a 3 month trend.

Please remember to abide by the laws the legislature has put into place regarding personal signage. Placing personal signage on county owned sign poles and Centerpoint owned streetlights is not allowed.  The Sheriffs' Department Nuisance Abatement Unit handles recurring issues and a few have received citations.  Anyone 16 years of age and younger is subject to the county’s curfew and must be off the streets between midnight and 6AM

Please support your neighborhood and the deputies by calling in suspicious activity.  You do not have to have a deputy stop by at you home.
